As a parent, you want your child to develop a love for reading and reap the many benefits it offers. However, getting resistant readers to pick up a book can be a challenging task. In this article, we bring you some effective and easy-to-do tips that you can implement to encourage your child to not just read but devour books.

1. Create a reading-friendly environment

A cozy reading nook can work wonders in attracting your child towards books. Dedicate a corner in your home as a reading space, furnished with comfortable seating, good lighting, and shelves filled with age-appropriate books. Make it a warm and inviting place that encourages your child to spend time reading.

Ensure that books are easily accessible to your child. Keep them within their reach, organize them based on their interests, and regularly update the collection to maintain their curiosity. Additionally, consider creating a mini-library with borrowed books from local libraries or setting up book exchanges within your community.

Remember, a visually appealing and easily accessible reading space can make a significant difference in enticing a resistant reader.

2. Set a reading routine

Consistency is key when it comes to fostering reading habits in your child. Establishing a reading routine can help in making reading a part of their daily life. Set aside a fixed time each day dedicated to reading, whether it's before bedtime, during lunch break, or after school.

Encourage your child to read at least 20 minutes every day during this allocated time. Be consistent with this routine, and soon it will become a natural habit for your child to look forward to.

3. Lead by example

Children imitate their parents, so it's essential to demonstrate your love for reading. Make it a point to read in front of your child regularly. Allow them to see you engrossed in a book, and explain how reading enhances your knowledge and imagination.

Incorporate reading into your family time. Consider having family reading sessions where everyone gathers together with their own books. By showing the joy and importance of reading, you can inspire your resistant reader to follow suit.

4. Offer a variety of reading materials

Children may resist reading if they feel bored or uninterested in the books available to them. To overcome this, expose your child to a wide range of reading materials. Offer them a variety of books, magazines, newspapers, comics, and even e-books.

Choose books based on their interests, hobbies, and passions. If your child loves animals, provide them with books on the topic, such as animal encyclopedias or fictional stories centered around animal characters. By catering to their preferences, you increase the chances of engagement and excitement in reading.

5. Join or start a book club

Book clubs provide an excellent platform for children to connect with their peers over shared reading interests. Encourage your child to join a local book club or arrange their own book club with friends or siblings.

In a book club, children can engage in discussions, share book recommendations, and even organize book-themed activities. The sense of community and belonging can motivate your child to read more actively and participate in reading-related interactions.

6. Use reading as a reward

Every child loves incentives, and reading should be no exception. Offer small rewards or incentives to motivate your child to read regularly. However, ensure that the rewards are not solely based on completing a book but rather on the time spent reading or the effort put into understanding the content.

For example, you can set up a reading chart where your child earns stickers for every 20 minutes they spend reading. Once they accumulate a certain number of stickers, they can trade them in for a small treat or a special privilege.

7. Visit bookstores and libraries together

Plan regular trips to bookstores and libraries with your child. Let them explore the aisles and shelves, giving them the liberty to choose books that capture their interest.

Bookstores often organize events and book signings by popular children's authors. Attending such events can spark your child's curiosity and enthusiasm for reading. Additionally, libraries often conduct reading programs and storytelling sessions that can further enhance your child's engagement with books.

8. Make reading interactive

Make reading a fun and interactive activity for your child. Encourage them to participate actively while reading by asking questions, predicting outcomes, and discussing characters. This not only fosters comprehension but also makes reading an enjoyable experience.

Experiment with different reading formats, such as audiobooks, eBooks, and even interactive reading apps. These mediums offer a unique and engaging way for children to interact with stories and expand their imagination.

9. Connect books to real-world experiences

Show your child how books relate to real-life experiences. If they read a book set in a different country, encourage them to explore facts and information about that place. If they come across a concept or topic they find intriguing, help them find related resources or plan field trips to relevant places.

By connecting books to their everyday lives, you can help your child understand the practical application of reading and the impact it can have on their overall learning.

10. Encourage reading with friends and family

Organize reading sessions where your child can read to younger siblings, grandparents, or even family pets. Reading aloud to others boosts confidence and makes the reading experience more interactive and enjoyable.

Encourage your child to recommend books to their friends and classmates. This can initiate conversations centered around books, creating a positive reading culture within their social circle.

Getting resistant readers to pick up and devour books requires patience and creativity. Integrate these parent-friendly and easy-to-do tips into your daily routine, and watch your child develop a lifelong love for reading.

Remember, every child is unique, and their reading journeys may vary. Stay supportive, encourage their choices, and celebrate their milestones along the way. With dedication and persistence, you can empower your child to unlock the magical world of books!

In my 21 years of classroom experience, one of the biggest complaints I get from kids is that the “Book is too hard!” There are many purposes for reading, but one of the most important purposes is to understand what is on the page.
When choosing a book, give a quick test…have them read the first page out loud. If they struggle with 5 words…the book is too hard. Find something easier. You will be amazed at the difference this can make in their motivation! After all, the goal here is to get them to read and not quit!
