There is a haunting tale that has been whispered through the ages, a tale of tragedy and loss that still resonates within the depths of the ocean. This is the story of the White Ship, a ship that set sail amidst a storm and never returned to shore. In honor of this fateful event, we present to you a collection of poetry dedicated to the White Ship.

The Fair Ghost of the Sea

Oh, like a ship fair ghost upon the sea, The White Ship sails to eternity. Its sails of silk, white as dove's wing, Bathed in moonlight, forever they'll sing.

The captain's heart, so full of pride, His crew filled with hope, they'll never hide. Through tempest's wrath, they gallantly fight, Seeking adventure, their spirits take flight.

But fate is fickle, and the storm's rage, Engulfs the ship, a merciless cage. Overboard they fall, one by one, Into the depths, their souls undone.

Lament of the Lost

Oh, hear the lament of those lost at sea, Their souls forever tangled, never to be free. Their voices carried by the wind's mournful wail, A haunting chorus of sorrow, their tale.

Their loved ones weep for their untimely end, Their hearts forever broken, they cannot mend. In dreams, they see the White Ship's ghostly light, Guiding them to the afterlife, out of sight.

But still, in darkness, their ghosts will roam, Yearning for the peace they will never know. Their faces, pale and etched with despair, A haunting reminder of a ship's nightmare.

Whispers of the Depths

Beneath the waves, where secrets lie, The White Ship rests, never to fly. Its hull entangled in seaweed's embrace, A silent witness to its final resting place.

But in the depths, whispers still abound, Of a ship once fair, now forever drowned. The sea creatures dance, their movements slow, Paying tribute to the forgotten souls below.

And when the moon rises, casting an ethereal glow, The ghosts of the White Ship put on a show. Their spectral figures float through the night, Seeking solace in the moon's gentle light.

Remembering the White Ship

So let us remember, with reverence and grace, The White Ship and its ill-fated chase. Its story a cautionary tale of human endeavors, A reminder of life's unpredictable weathers.

And while the ship may have met its tragic end, Its legacy lingers, helping hearts on the mend. For it reminds us to cherish each fleeting breath, And the fragility of life, as brief as a ship's sail's breadth.

So sail on, fair ghost upon the sea, The White Ship's memory forever shall be. In tales and poetry, your story lives on, A haunting reminder, even when we're gone.

May the White Ship's tragic tale forever remind us of the fragility of life and the power of the sea. For in its tragedy, we find solace and inspiration to embrace each fleeting moment and hold dear those we love.

“Like a Ship's Fair Ghost Upon the Sea” is a collection of poetry by various poets dedicated to the White Ship, a vessel that sank in the English Channel on 25th November, 1120. The ship was carrying around 300 people, including the only legitimate son and heir of King Henry I of England, William Adelin. All but one of those aboard died, and it was the death of William Adelin that led to a succession crisis in England that threw the country into civil war and a time that would be known as the Anarchy between 1135-53. Contents include: “Ballad of a Ship, By Edwin Arlington Robinson”, “The White Ship, By Dante Gabriel Rossetti”, and “He Never Smiled Again, By Felicia Hemans”. Ragged Hand is proudly publishing this brand new collection of classic poetry now for the enjoyment of a new generation of poetry lovers.
