The Not So Famous Five Suffragists In Canada: School Marms And Suffragettes

When we think about the suffragette movement, names like Emmeline Pankhurst in the UK and Susan B. Anthony in the US often come to mind. However, there were countless brave women in Canada who fought tirelessly for women's suffrage but often remain unknown. In this article, we will shed light on five remarkable suffragists who made significant contributions to the movement in Canada. These women, known as the "School Marms and Suffragettes," played a vital role in securing women's right to vote in our nation.
1. Clara Brett Martin
Clara Brett Martin made history by becoming the first female lawyer in Canada. Born in 1874, Martin faced numerous challenges and opposition while striving for her dream. She fought for women's rights not only within the legal profession but also as a suffragette. Martin's determination and dedication inspired many women to pursue their aspirations fearlessly, breaking barriers and creating opportunities for future generations of women.
2. Dr. Augusta Stowe-Gullen
Dr. Augusta Stowe-Gullen was the first female doctor in Canada, a true pioneer and suffragist. Despite facing discrimination and prejudice, Stowe-Gullen never wavered in her commitment to the betterment of women's lives. She played a crucial role in advancing the cause of women's suffrage through her medical expertise and unyielding determination. Stowe-Gullen's contributions to both the medical field and the suffragette movement are invaluable.

3. Nellie McClung
Nellie McClung was a prominent suffragette, author, and social activist. Known for her powerful and persuasive speeches, she worked tirelessly to secure women's right to vote in Manitoba and played a crucial role in the Famous Five's fight for constitutional recognition of women as "persons" under the British North America Act. McClung's determination, eloquence, and witty personality made her a force to be reckoned with in the suffragette movement.
4. Emily Murphy
Emily Murphy was not only a suffragist but also a trailblazing magistrate, writer, and women's rights activist. She was the first woman magistrate in Canada and the British Empire, breaking yet another glass ceiling for women. Murphy was one of the Famous Five and played a pivotal role in the "Persons Case," which eventually granted women the right to serve in the Senate. Her relentless pursuit of justice and gender equality paved the way for future generations of women.
5. Irene Parlby
Irene Parlby was a suffragette and the second woman to hold a position in the Canadian government. She served as the Minister without Portfolio in Alberta, fighting for the rights and well-being of women and children. Parlby's commitment to social reform, coupled with her advocacy for suffrage, made her an influential figure in the Canadian suffragette movement. Her legacy as a progressive voice in politics continues to inspire women today.
While their names may not be as widely recognized as some of their counterparts, the School Marms and Suffragettes played a vital role in shaping the history of Canadian women's suffrage. Clara Brett Martin, Dr. Augusta Stowe-Gullen, Nellie McClung, Emily Murphy, and Irene Parlby each made significant contributions to the movement, breaking barriers, and advocating for equal rights. Their resilience, determination, and passion inspired women from all walks of life to stand up for their rights and create a more inclusive society. Remembering their stories and the progress they achieved is crucial in honoring their legacy and continuing the fight for gender equality.

In 1917, Premier Borden of Canada pushed through the War Time Elections Act that gave the vote only to women with close relations in the war.
Not very democratic at all!
Some Canadian suffragists were appalled, but others thought it a good and just action, considering the circumstances.
Nellie McClung, Famous Five suffragist, is often given the credit for having given Premier Borden the idea, but more compelling evidence points to someone else, an Eastern-based suffrage acitivist, Constance Hamilton.
This work of speculative historical fiction brings Constance Hamilton back to life with four other forgotten Canadian suffragists to explain the complicated world of suffrage politics back in the day.
